Lifestyle medicine is a medical approach that uses evidence-based behavioral interventions to prevent, treat and manage chronic disease.
The American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) supports and codifies the core competencies of lifestyle medicine that guide practice, helping primary care providers understand how lifestyle impacts health. By integrating lifestyle factors into practice or health program design, care providers can more effectively coach patients about nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep, social support, and environmental exposures to help them make lasting improvements in their health and wellbeing.
Lifestyle Medicine in Undergraduate Medical Education
ACPM has developed a strategic roadman for the integration of lifestyle medicine and preventive medicine core-competencies into the foundational curriculum of undergraduate medical education to better prepare future physicians to help their patients maintain wellbeing, reduce healthcare costs, and improve care quality.
